Eating Disorders
“According to the Renfrew Center Foundation for Eating Disorders (2003), ‘Up to 24 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder (anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder) in the United States.’” from the article entitled Anorexia Nervosa: Patient and Family Centered Care (Silber,
Lyster-Mensh, & Duval, 2011)
An eating disorder is characterized by abnormal eating habits that involve either insufficient or excessive food intake that can negatively affect an individual's physical and emotional health. The cause of eating disorders are multi-faceted and not yet fully understood. It is estimated that eating disorders affect approximately 5-10 million females and 1 million males in the United States. Two of the most common eating disorders are Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa (What is an eating disorder?).
